China Unicom Launches iPhones

BEIJING, Nov 02, 2009 (SinoCast Daily Business Beat via COMTEX News Network) -- China Unicom (Hong Kong) Ltd. (SEHK: 0762 and NYSE: CHU) launched iPhones for Beijing customers on October 30, 2009, when many China-based stores of Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: APPL) also started the sale of such smartphones, citing a report.

The Chinese mobile operator announced that from October 31, it would carry out the iPhone promotional campaigns in 30 Chinese provincial capital cities in succession, and from the following day, its franchisees would begin serving iPhone fans.

Some of the China Unicom-customized iPhones are priced at CNY 4,999, CNY 5,880, CNY 6,999 per set, with 8G, 16G, and 32G flash memories, respectively. If a customer signed a 2-year contract with the mobile operator about the iPhone service package, a cellphone would be offered for free or at the maximum price of CNY 3,999.

In addition, China Unicom's WCDMA network had covered 285 Chinese cities by October 1, said the general manager Lu Yimin, adding that the number of his company's 3G users has exceeded 1 million by far.
